The Terminal Decay Concordance

Terminal Decay by unslinky is a fan fiction novel that takes place shortly after the episode "The Planet of the Dead"in the series Doctor Who. The story is Alternate Universe to everything Doctor Who and Torchwood after that. Unslinky started posting this amazing story in May 2010 and here it is March 2011 and the story is far from being completed. The story is on the website A Teaspoon and an Open Mind.

I am such a big fan of this novel and it's amazing complexities, I decided to write a
concordance for Terminal Decay.
The labels in this blog can be used to track of who's who and what's what in the novel. For instance if you scroll down to "seizures" you'll find that it has (3). When you click on that label you'll come up with the Chapters that has someone having a seizure: Chapter 410, 509, 555.
The summaries are just to jog your memory and sometimes I'll write something pertaining to that Chapter that is a bit of TD trivia. The Blog Entries themselves are listed below the rather long (and bound to be even longer) Labels section. Summary inconsistencies should be directed to me and I'll make corrections.
Writing this is a long process so I'm far from being caught up but I'm trying! One final thing: I am American so my phrasing and spelling may look a little "off" to you in the UK

Terminal Decay Chapter 555

Chapter 555 link

The morning's activities are delayed about an hour so that everyone who stayed up most of the night can get a little sleep. Everyone has breakfast. Jack has not yet returned from stretching his legs. The Doctor awakes and is given several updates on everyone's condition, including how he fractured his garansicht when he had suffered two violent seizures. The Doctor asks about Jacko, Ryan and Pete and is concerned about John hurting his back and being in a jacket. The pain that the Doctor is feeling is excruciating causing him to involuntarily try and go into regeneration and respiratory bypass. John talks the Doctor through his pain and the bypass is adverted. Before he passes out from the pain, the Doctor says something to John in Gallifreyan: Kal histal…" and "Ej… n’jaro…" To which John sighs and replies that he is sorry.

Chapter 554 | link

Martin gives Ryan the No Pain for his pain now that he is awake. John considers giving Kingsley and Lucy the No Pain for their pain relief also. John explains to Mickey that the Doctor is bound to the TARDIS and doesn’t believe he has the right to let anyone onto the Doctor’s ship without his knowledge or permission. Martha observes that John is very tender in all his actions concerning his sons and worries about John needing rest and his negative reaction to the Doctor when he had started to wake. There is a discussion on farts and vegetables between Simon and John and Ryan.
Simon informs John about the processing of the sample of Jack’s energy to be given to the Doctor, of which he and Donna are both pleased with the results. Greg has finally landed in Gatwick and should arrive at Torchwood. Donna, Greg, Nelly, Simon and George are working in the lab in pairs. After reading the results of the energy transfer on the PDA John concurs that the energy plasma will help the Doctor and plans to give him the energy at one liter every six hours. Simon tells John about the protein synthesis for Rose. John advises Simon to keep Sue informed on the progress on the protein and Artron energy. John contemplates that his life with Rose is finished now and the thought of being a part of her treatment was something he thought he couldn’t emotionally handle.
Martha confides in Simon that she believes that John needs to have some uninterrupted rest.

Terminal Decay Chapter 511

Chapter 511 link

Having broken his leg while trying to retrieve the brace for the Doctor, Jack has trapped himself in the brace and has broken his leg and wants to heal his leg by using his gun to kill himself. Donna believes that although that is a quick way to sort out the broken leg it might be best if Jack agrees to have his leg set and heal the normal way in order to give everyone else a good example. Jack disagrees because he feels if he is hurt then he can’t be there for the Doctor. Meanwhile Andy is still holding the Doctor’s leg so that his femoral arteries are not sheared by a broken bone. Jack and Ianto discuss his pain and that although it hurts terribly sense he is a 51st century male his nervous system is slightly different and the pain isn’t as bad as it would be for a 21st century human. Ianto and Jack also discuss the mutated protein that carries the Artron energy in Jack and how if it’s synthesized it may be able to help Rose, although his healing with Artron energy only works on soft tissue, and being an immortal and shooting yourself to revive isn’t simple: it’s hard to kill yourself and then revive. For now, Jack believes if he delays shooting himself and Donna does the scans then everyone may benefit from knowing how his healing works on bones.

minutes in duration. After being placed on the gurney the Doctor starts
to emit a eerily low wail that unnerves everyone. Luke discovers through
the TARDIS scan that the Doctor has broken his right femur which is worse
for a Time Lord than it is for a human to break. The break to his femur
is both proximal and distal in the shaft of his femur: shearing through
both ends. Jacko who wants to draw his Uncle Dad a picture is persuaded
to go the the TARDIS galley for biscuits. Wilf informs everyone that the
Doctor has hurt himself quite seriously. Sylvia and Wilf help Jackie take
the now very upset Jacko to the galley because he's heard and seen the
Doctor wailing and groaning.

Keith has a hard time reconciling the fact that the TARDIS has medical equipment that could save lives but is cautioned by both Donna and Sue that using the equipment out of time and duplicating the equipment could cause problems: the equipment not being created and lives lost and planets affected by going public with these medical advances. Donna worries if the TARDIS should be moved if she isn't in a safe environment. Sue assures her that the TARDIS is safe and apologizes for Keith's outbursts. Keith is unhappy that Sue left them with very little warning and rant about having to endure IVF due to being attacked by Rose in the past.

Chapter 508 link

Tom goes to the Doctor in the lab where he is feeling dizzy and sick again. Tom wants to put on a split but is advised by Luke who has looked at the Doctor’s scans that he will need a full reduction: his bones had fractured and had forced his hand backward. The scans reveal an anomaly that appears spongy and less dense at the ends of his bones which as the Doctor explains are like shock absorbers but now are looking decalcified and brittle. They believe this has been caused by the Doctor’s chemotherapy drugs which has leached his bone of magnesium. Rather than giving the Doctor milk of magnesia they will have to find another magnesium supplement after tests are run to confirm that is what is wrong with the Doctor’s bones. As they are moving the Doctor to sit up from the lab table, the Doctor’s vertigo comes back and he loses his tea he had drank and his more dizzy. Jack offers to carry the Doctor back to bed but the Doctor seems to throw himself background over tipping the stool and landing on the floor.

Grandma Rose and Jacko have a talk, Jackie, Tom and Sue are informed about the Doctor’s wrist. Tom goes off to fetch a splint and a sling for the Doctor. Martha is concerned about the stabilization ligaments may also be in his wrists and suggests to Tom to have finger traps ready just in case when Tom sorts out the Doctor’s wrist.

Luke is flabbergasted in how the Doctor is so sick but he is excited to be able to fly the TARDIS. The Doctor admits to Luke and Donna that he had involuntarily gave himself an adrenaline surge. The adrenaline surge which the Doctor didn’t completely induce on his own is enabling him to get out of isolation rather than be physically miserable because he can focus on something outside of himself like help Rose and Ryan and Jack. Donna gives him a lecture on being an Out of Space Donut Hole. The Doctor wants to take a look at Ryan’s scans but breaks his wrist trying to move a microscope on the work bench, feeling defeated, the Doctor lets a tear escape his eye as he has his head down on the bench.

Terminal Decay Summary 505

Chapter 505 link

The Doctor and Jack examine and places the scabs from Jack’s deep incision on slides for the TARDIS to evaluate. Jack worries about the Doctor’s health to which the Doctor says that if they don’t sort out everyone else John will not be in a position to donate the bone marrow. Jack discusses with the Doctor that he is just as needed to survive this ordeal and what would Jacko do without his Uncle Dad. Donna discusses the use of the telepathic block by using a low dosage of chemical deconstruction to isolate the telepathic center of the brain so that John would not feel the illness that the Doctor would experience from the bone marrow transfer and only if it’s necessary. The Doctor again tells Jack he meant what he said that he loved him. While checking Jack’s blood Donna discovers that Jack is carrying a massive protein that carries Artron energy that acts to heal Jack. The Doctor believes if they can synthesize this protein then it could be used to create a chemical base that could possibly heal Rose and may be able to help heal the other persons hurt by Rose. The Doctor plans on flying the TARDIS to the other universe.

Terminal Decay Summary 504

Chapter 504 link

The TARDIS supplies Donna and Luke reams of charts and graphs pertaining to Rose’s condition. From what they can gather, the TARDIS is scared and fearful and keeps reprinting the charts and graphs. Donna and Luke through a series of questions are told by the TARDIS that she never willingly gave Rose the energy but that it was taken from her and that it hurt when she took the energy from her. The TARDIS is concerned that if the Doctor or John found this out that they would show less compassion in helping Rose in her current dire situation. The Doctor, arriving in the lab, conveys to Donna and Luke that Rose is basically frozen out of time because of the Artron energy. Nothing is going to change for Rose. She will just continue to exist until the Artron energy naturally dissipates and drops to a level where it is unable to support the suspension which could take 213,487,114 years according to Luke’s calculation. The Doctor tells Luke and Donna that in order to help Rose they need to study Jack to see what are the fundamental differences are if it this can be harnessed so that Rose can use the Artron energy to heal her injuries as much as it can in order to give her a chance. The Doctor wants to know if the Artron energy in Jack and in Rose will be less in the other universe and wants to observe how Jack heals in situ by observing a tissue sample being taken from Jack. Jack tells the Doctor he will be brave.

Upon leaving the isolation room, the Doctor receives hugs from Jacko and explains to him that he is only out of the isolation room for some special work. The Doctor sees the damage that has been done to Martha’s knee, Jacko offers the Doctor his blanket since he was trembling in the wheelchair. John is still unconscious. Jacko worries that if the Doctor is unwell and trembling he may get cross. The doctor explains to Jacko about the difference of being cross and being very sick and forgetting who you are in the case of Jacko’s mother. Jack gives Jacko his WWW I Victorian Cross medal for being brave. The Doctor inspects Martha’s scans and agrees that surgery would be best and then use the TARDIS’ tissue generator. The Doctor prioritizes the Ryan’s leg injuries and Pete’s chest injuries for the TARDIS equipment. He also tells them about the no pain medication vs. morphine. Martha is given a mini lecture on pain control from the Doctor but then is chagrined when he is told Martha has an intolerance for morphine. There is discussion with Jacko about the possibility on drawing on Captain Jack after everyone is sorted much to the happiness of a four year old but not an immortal.

Terminal Decay Chapter 502

Chapter 502 link

The Doctor resists the calming, lulling effect of Jack’s platonic caresses and explains to Jack what he think will happen to Rose, that she is in a kind of Artron stasis. This stasis could last for over a million years so the Doctor believes that they have three choices: take the energy from her and allow her to die; leave her as she is and make provision for her to be cared for: though stored may be a more appropriate requirement for her in this condition, or, we try to give her a chance. One way to give Rose a chance is to research how the Artron energy is used by Jack. The Doctor convinces Jack to let him go to the lab for an hour in order to help not only Rose but John, Michael and Jacko who need to have their lives go forward and not have Rose in suspended animation; for Rose to have the best outcome to her situation. Jack is pleased to see the old determination in the Doctor but is also worried about him over extending himself and that the Doctor was doing this because he had a purpose: a life to save and people to help which he hadn’t been able to do since he arrived in Torchwood ill. The Doctor is relieved that the TARDIS let him out of the isolation room.

Terminal Decay Chapter 501

Chapter 501 link

As the Doctor laid there asleep but yet not asleep he thought of 702 things at the same time: lying in Jack’s arms, the fate of Rose: that she wasn’t going to die and she wasn’t going to be reanimated either but was suspended in some sort of Artron energy stasis until the Artron energy decayed and that could take a very very long time. The solution was how to safely extract the energy that was in Rose and let her die naturally or find out a way that the Artron energy could be used to help her. That Rose had been foolhardy and risked planets and perhaps two universes when she started to use the dimension cannon and although he was happy to see her at first, it wasn’t for him that she had crossed universes, it was for herself. The Doctor thought about how dangerous it was that Rose had taken the heart of TARDIS into her and that having that kind of power was also dangerous. He thought about Jack and how Jack was immortal and how did the Artron energy affect Jack’s physiology? How did Jack process the energy when it was impossible for a human to? And they needed to sort this out before they traveled to the other universe, because the energy would lose its potency over there and may be even less they could do for Rose (using the energy she contained.) He thought about leaving the isolation room and helping in the science lab to see if he could sort things out but first he had to wake up although technically he wasn’t really asleep. He wanted to help and not be a burden on Tom and Sue because they had enough on their plates, didn’t they? He also needed to do a bone density scan on his ankle because that certainly wasn’t right, and waking Jack wouldn’t be fair to Jack if he roused him by moving. But Jack was caressing his head now and telling him to go back to sleep and it was so tempting to just drift back to sleep...

Terminal Decay Chapter 500

Chapter 500 link

Jacko asks Martha why his Mum hurt her too. Jacko struggles with trying to understand why being naughty gets you hurt. Martha explains to Jacko his mother was not cross but very ill when she did what she did to them. Jacko tells Martha what happened to him and Michael and how cross his mother was at him. Jacko tries to understand why his father was cross and that he had pushed his dad over and made him fall. Martha also talks with Jacko about his father and his getting sick and needing an operation in his head and that his dad wasn’t cross with him, but he was ill. Martha realizes that everyone will need to talk about what happened and especially they will need to have a child counselor talk with Jacko about what happened. Tom brings strawberry milkshake for Jacko and agrees that a banana milkshake should be given to John when he wakes up. Tom teaches Jacko slurping with a straw much to Martha’s chagrin.

Terminal Decay Chapter 499

Tom reports that the Doctor’s ankle is definitely fractured and will need attending soon; the Doctor believes there is structural deficiency in his ankle after looking at his scans. Francine and Clive are still delayed in arriving in Cardiff due to an accident on the M25. Martha is on codeine for her knee injury. Tom discusses surgery with Martha on her knee. Jacko wakes up from the sedatives and wants his father and his very clingy wanting Tom to not leave him alone even to get a milkshake for him. Jacko and Martha have a conversation about Martha’s injury and play spot the fracture on Jacko’s leg with the help of the TARDIS. Jacko tells Martha that Mummy hurt him.
